Make it a “Craft Beer” Veterinary Vacation in Richmond

Beer

Do you like craft beer?  How about cider, mead, or distilled spirits?  Richmond has become known for its craft beer scene, and Helping Hands Veterinary Surgery and Dental Care is located near Scott’s Addition – the epicenter of Richmond’s beer revolution.  A summary of the local scene is outlined in the following article by WTVR:

http://wtvr.com/2016/02/22/scotts-addition-breweries-flock-to-area/

Approximately 1/3 of Richmond’s Craft Beers/Ciders are made within 1 mile of Helping Hands.  The great news is that most breweries are pet-friendly, so you can enjoy a frosty one with your best friend.

We will be providing updates and posts about individual breweries.  In the meantime, here are some general observations about the local scene:

Hardywood Craft Brewery  – Our closest neighbor, just around the block.  Known for their Gingerbread Stout.  Thursday evenings are food truck nights with big crowds.

The Veil Brewing Co. – Newest brewery with excellent reputation for quality beers.  They do not sell growler fills, and have a limited canned selections that usually are released on Tuesday and sell out before the weekend.  For many, the only taste of their beers will be through their tasting room.  Known for their IPA’s including Crucial Taunt & Master Shredder.  If cans are for sale be sure to purchase some to take with you.

Ardent Craft Ales – Quality beers and one of areas best beer gardens – a favorite amongst pet owners.

Isley Brewery – Home of a local favorite – Choosy Mother – Peanut Butter Porter.

Strangeways Brewing – Not in Scott’s Addition, but close by.  Known for Sours and Uniquely Infused Beers.  Fun tap room with some picnic tables outside.  Open daily at Noon so you can stop by the day of your pet’s procedure and leave Richmond with a growler.  They also have a trio of stouts flavored with Bourbon, Tequila, or Rum.

We encourage you to make your trip to Richmond a true Veterinary Vacation – Medical Tourism for Pets.  While we take care of your pets, we want to make sure you have a great time to help ease your anxiety and pass the time.  Feel free to call Jake (804-651-1877) if you want to discuss any potential plans while you are in Richmond.

Where to go when you have to work while your pet is undergoing surgery/dentistry at Helping Hands

Your pet is dropped off at our office between 7:30-9:00am and you can’t pick up until 4:00pm.  You have your computer with you and need to get work done.  What are your options?  Thankfully, there are several great places you can work during the day in Richmond.

Helping Hands

One of the easiest ways to work in Richmond for the day is to use our new client lounge!  We have free wifi available for all of our clients.  There are multiple tables and wall mounted desks for you to spread out with your laptop. Coffee is available throughout the day, in addition to the sodas, water and snacks, all of which are complementary.  If you are lucky, you will also have Chilly (our tie dyed poodle) in the lounge to provide moral support!

Public Libraries

We are so fortunate to have the newest library in the region just a few miles away, Henrico County’s Libbie Mill Library.  This library has a collection of all new books and is located on a beautiful property overlooking a lake.

Libbie Mill Library has comfortable seating throughout with free wifi for the public.  The library opens at 9am Monday through Friday.  If you get hungry or thirsty, the library even has vending machines.  For a more substantial meal, you can walk over to Southern Season, a gourmet superstore.  Wawa is around the corner and offers delicious custom made sandwiches for those on a budget.

Another nearby library is the City of Richmond – Belmont Library.  One of the best reasons to go to this library is its approximation to Carytown, which is only one block away.  This library is much smaller than Libbie Mill, but they do have a wonderful helpful staff and free wifi.

I would recommend using Belmont Library later in the day so you can take advantage of one of our favorite shops in Richmond, Belmont Butchery, which is just across the street.

Belmont butchery sells the real deal dog treats.  Also they have one of the best selections of meat in town, cut to order in most cases. And if you are interested in charcuterie, you have also come to the right place.

Coffee Houses

While there are so many coffee houses in the local area, I will concentrate in this blog on two that are nearby:  Urban Farmhouse and Cartwheels and Coffee.

There are two reasons why we have recommended the Urban Farmhouse.  First of all, it is enormous with many tables, chairs and space to spread out.  It is usually not extremely crowded, and the coffee is quite good.

If you are bringing young children/infants with you for your day at Helping Hands Affordable Veterinary Surgery and Dental Care, we have a great place for you to visit between 9am and 1pm: Cartwheels and Coffee.  They have great play areas for your children, from infants to toddlers with tables and a good selection of coffee and snacks.

These recommendations are by no means comprehensive. In the future I will include other places and feel free to comment to suggest spots that might be useful to our clients.
